Bill to Raise Minimum Wage to $8.50/HR Introduced in Assembly Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assembly Labor Committee Chairman Keith Wright just introduced a bill to raise the minimum wage from its current $7.25 per hour rate to one of $8.50 per hour and to adjust it annually for inflation. Specifically, A-9148 calls for the minimum wage to increase from $7.25/hour to $8.50/hour beginning in January of 2013. The wage will be indexed, requiring an increase every year to adjust for inflation in accordance with the Consumer Price Index. Indexing will begin in January, 2014. The measure is heavily backed by the NYS AFL-CIO and a broad coaltion of labor unions, community groups and the Working Families Party. Surprisingly, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressed a desire last year to see an increase in the minimum wage rather that enactment of a "living wage" bill, which both he and the local business community including PIA, strongly oppose. Gov. Cuomo has a press conference later today and will no doubt address his thoughts on the Assembly measure. With our member firms still struggling economically, PIA opposes this measure and any companion bills introduced in the State Senate, as do other major business groups. PIA plans to follow up shortly with a "Voter Voice" letter for you to personalize and send to your elected representatives. In the interim, please feel free to offer any reactions/thoughts you have to me at vkeenan@PIAlliance.org as soon as possible so that they can be incorporated into our association's message to the Legislature.
