Government Affairs - Printing Industries Alliance

Government Affairs

Printing Industries Alliance is representing the graphic communication industry at the national, state and local levels.

Industry Advocacy

Tapella How can an individual graphic communications firm have its voice heard in Washington, Albany, Trenton, Harrisburg or even at a local level?

The Government Affairs programs administered by Printing Industries Alliance and Printing Industries of America bring industry issues and views to our federal, state and local governments. Understanding how complex laws and regulations impact your firm can be challenging and time consuming.

Communicating the impact of these laws on your elected officials is equally frustrating. Every day, experienced government affairs staff at Printing Industries Alliance and Printing Industries of America are protecting your ability to profitably conduct business by presenting industry views on:

    • Health Care Reform * Postal Reform * Employee Free Choice Act and other
    • labor issues
    • “Do Not Mail” * Sales Tax * Energy Policy and Cost
    • Estate Tax Reform * Cap and Trade * OSHA and other environmental
    • matters
    • Workers Compensation . . . and more

PIA Legislative Victories:

    • Defeating efforts to collect sales tax on direct mail printing in New York State
    • Derailing proposed “Do Not Mail” legislation in New Jersey and New York
    • Establishing an $8 million Printers Relocation Fund for graphics firms displaced by zoning initiatives in New York City.
    • Representing industry positions with various regulatory agencies, including OSHA, EPA, Consumer Product Safety Commission and more.
    • Lending efforts to exclude children’s books and other printed products from onerous Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), testing and certification requirements.

We advocate constantly on your behalf, supporting public policies, legislation and regulations that will improve business conditions, profitability and opposing those that do not.

PIA members are kept informed on state and federal legislative issues through regular mailed and emailed communications. “Keenan’s Corner”, penned by PIA Vice President Vicki Keenan, reports on legislative affairs at the state and local level. Look for this regular column in the PIA Signature newsletter. In the national arena, imPRINT reports on association activities representing your interests in Washington. PIA Legislative Action Center

Often legislative issues are fast-tracked, necessitating a rapid response from the industry. That’s why Printing Industries Alliance established its Legislative Action Center. Using the technology behind the Legislative Action Center, members can send a personalized letter, email or fax on a key issue to their local elected representative.

The PIA Legislative Action Center was instrumental in several legislative initiatives, most notably defeating efforts to collect New York State Sales Tax on printed promotional materials.  PIA has recently asked upstate New York members to take action on the proposed Manufacturing Tax Credits.

PrintPACPrintPAC is the only national political action committee focused solely on representing the graphic communications industry. PrintPAC’s mission is to provide financial resources to elect pro-print, pro-business candidates to Congress. Printing Industries Alliance has a strong record of support for PrintPAC recognizing the need to speak with one voice in Washington.
